In collaboration with the Independent Media Center, Freenet is working to help grassroots alternative journalists from across the spectrum to get their message out, in the face of threats and opposition from entrenched governmental and commercial interests in places like Chiapas. Freenet also creates a distribution channel useful for banned exposes like Peter (Spycatcher) Wright's and David Shayler's revelations about MI5.

In collaboration with Debian Linux, Freenet is working to provide better distribution of large software updates, using the system's dynamic caching and mirroring capabilities.

Anyone can create a website or publish information on Freenet, without needing to buy a domain name, a permanent Internet connection, or even a computer. Hence, the ability to communicate ideas becomes independent of personal wealth or position. Freenet does not impose any space restrictions or compulsory advertising. The value of information is determined purely by the desire of others to read it.
